Horse Racing Handicapping and Horse Racing Betting Are Two Different Arts

Some people claim that horse racing handicapping is an art while others say it is a science. The same may be said of horse racing betting. Whether you call them art or science one thing is certain, you can be good at one or both and make a profit, but if you're only going to be good at one, it better be betting (money management).

Whether or not you can actually handicap a horse race, if you are good at betting and understand gambling, you can probably make a profit betting on horse races. Some times we focus so much on deciphering a race that we lose sight of just how important wagering can be. Good money management can mesthelioma you through times of bad handicapping better than good handicapping will get you through times of bad money management. Remember that.

Maybe you are sick to death of hearing about the Belmont now and want to move on, but if you do move on you better take the lessons of that fiasco with you or you'll soon be broke. If you are one of the people who took one to four odds on Big Brown, then you are learning that lesson right now. Maybe you never would have picked Da'Tara to win, but that doesn't mean you should have bet on Big Brown. If you can't make a case for any other horse than the one going off at 1-4, it might mean you lay off the race.

If you can't get the odds you want on any of the horses you deem to be contenders in a race, the obvious thing to do is to leave the race alone. In other words, don't bet it. That is good money management. It isn't the bets that you make that make you successful it is the bets that you don't make. Making a simple rule for yourself like this, "I will never take less than two to one odds again, " will save you a lot of pain and poverty in the future.

If you are going to bet on horse races to make money it is important to make some guidelines for yourself. One of them should be not to accept short odds on a horse. Another one might be to have a good system and stick to it.

The most consistent horse racing systems have to have the basics and a handicapper must understand the basics. I have been around horse racing for 50 years including as an owner. Without the basics the rest is not going to do any good.
